Looking  Inward:
Conversations Between Our Images and Ourselves

Jenny Jacklin Stratton & Sarah Blesener

In collaboration with  Click! Photography Festival and Photo Farm NC

Downtown Durham Convention Center, Durham NC - Saturday, Oct 4, 2025 - 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm  ET

What do our images reveal about how we see? How does our relationship with certain images shift over time? And how might photography become a space for self reflection, understanding, and deeper connection with others?

This one-hour interactive session, led by photographers and visual researchers Sarah Blesener and Jenny Jacklin Stratton, invites participants to bring a print or digital photograph (or two)—from their professional work, personal life, or family archive—as a starting point for shared exploration and reflection. We’ll spend time reflecting on and reworking a photograph, while engaging with artworks and images that help bridge the space between looking inward and seeing outward. We’ll explore how photographs not only document the external world but also carry traces of our inner landscapes—our values, emotions, questions, and assumptions.

Blesener and Stratton will share learnings and insights from Enter/Exit, a project of methodologies, critiques, poetry and art outlining collaborative ways of working in visual journalism and documentary media. Published as a toolkit and framework, Enter/Exit offers strategies and approaches for photojournalists, artists, and practitioners, especially those working on sensitive stories. This session will consider how looking inward can be a practice of care: toward ourselves, toward each other, and toward the stories we choose to tell.

“What is no longer archived in the same way, is no longer lived in the same way.”

This hands-on workshop engages personal and communal archives as living spaces for reflection, recovery, connection, and creation through collage, photography and performance. Together, we will look at poetry, literature, art, and photography. We will restitch, paint, pick flowers, and tear things up. We will reimagine, reshare, release and hold on to our archives--re-engaging them not as static records, but as evolving tools for storytelling, memory work and restorative futures. Participants will have the option to also have their archival (re)creations digitized, and contribute to a collective archive of our shared experiences.

Deadline: Rolling until filled; capacity will be limited to maintain an intimate space. All skill levels/experiences welcome!

CORE WORKSHOP

Session I: Virtual, Dates- November 21-23, 2025
Session II: Virtual, Dates-October 2026 (tbd)

This intensive, practice and mentorship-based immersive visual workshop will be beneficial to photographers of all levels looking to dive into the ins and outs of long form visual storytelling through building community and developing their personal and long-term projects.

Long-term documentary work demands a high level of commitment, creativity, persistence, planning and strategy. Our approach to community and skill building combine  non-traditional resources, using poetry, music, literature, film, trauma-informed care and critical theory to help inform how we craft visual narratives—together  digging into the logistical and emotional challenges unique to developing long-term documentary storytelling.
Through hands-on assignments, guest speakers, editing and critique sessions as well as surveying past and contemporary works, participants will come away with new ideas, actionable strategies, and a refreshed vision for their own project/practice.
